Kaas, AKA, Cheese!

It has been 9 years almost to the day that my husband and I left the Netherlands after living there for two years.

Enroute From Amsterdam to New York

I tell you this because yesterday I was at the local grocery store walking by the deli and my eye caught the cheese section.

For whatever the reason the Goudse kaas stood out. It brought back a flood of memories. Perhaps because it is the same time of year as it was nine years ago when we left Holland, or that I was 30 weeks pregnant with our first son nine years ago, or the way it was packaged.

Whatever the reason, I had to have it NOW. My taste buds where screaming for it. I blame that partly on my current pregnancy. ;-)

Upon arriving home I made this.

Exactly the taste I was going for. A little taste of Holland right here in the States!

My Goudse Kaas Sandwich:

  • Sandwich thin (Arnold brand)
  • Hummus
  • Gouda cheese (from local deli)
  • Baby romaine (organic girl)
  • Tomatoes
  • Red peppers
  • Drizzle olive oil on top
  • Sprinkle cumin, paprika, salt and pepper

Eet smakelijk! (Enjoy your meal) ;-)

27 Weeks and Counting

Today I am 27 weeks pregnant!

How I have been feeling:

Overall much better!  I still get a little nausea every day, but it is manageable. I am up and about and staying awake longer at night which is actually very nice and I have been able to catch up on all our DVR recordings of Modern Family, finally!

Short of breath is in full swing. I mentioned before that I was not able to take my pre-natal vitamins due to my extreme nausea so I know that I am lacking in iron and Folic Acid. I feel comfortable with getting enough folic acid through my diet but I know that I am lacking in iron. However, a few weeks ago, I was at our local vitamin store and I found a liquid iron supplement Floravital Iron+Herbs. It has made a huge difference in the way I feel. I am not as short of breath when I take this. It makes perfect sense as iron is an essential mineral that functions primarily as a carrier of oxygen in the body. During pregnancy, women need 20-30mg per day*.

Tired. I have an overall tired feeling, a 20-30 minute nap really makes a difference in the afternoon…I need to do that more. I try to lay down a few times a week, especially on days that we have baseball games in the evening.

Weight Gain: 21 pounds and not too much swelling, although my rings do not fit anymore. :-(

How is the exercising going:

I am only walking a few days a week for about 25-35 minutes at a decent pace. The thing that stops me now is the Braxton hix contractions, I get them daily and they hurt, especially when I am walking. This is my 4th pregnancy and I have heard that they increase with each pregnancy, I can vouch for that!

Preparation for Baby girl R: I have bought/received a few clothes and crib sheets but other than that we have done nothing to get her crib/room put together. All in time!

Upcoming Dr. visits and test: Next week I have to take the gestational diabetes test…YUK. I despise the orange sugar drink they make you take…and it makes me feel awful.

I get another ultrasound at 30 weeks for a weight measure and position check. Then its a Dr. visit every other week! Tick tock, tick tock! Woo Hoo!
